Teagasc - Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority, Animal & Bioscience Research Department

Logo Teagasc

The Animal & Bioscience Research Department of Teagasc, the agriculture and food development authority in Ireland, one of the three new partners that joined LowInputBreeds in 2011 to bring in additional expertise and data to subproject 1 on cattle.

Research in the Animal & Bioscience Research Department encompasses nutrition, fertility, breeding, health and welfare. Research activities focus on producing profitable animals and the corresponding management strategies to deliver the productivity, sustainability and product quality targets set out in Ireland’s Food Harvest 2020 vision.

The Animal & Bioscience Research Department uses a powerful combination of established animal science techniques, as well as cutting-edge molecular and computational biology tools, to answer relevant industry research questions. The focus is on dairy and beef cattle and sheep. The department has developed animal models that are divergent for a range of economically important traits.
