The Federal University of Viçosa UFV was founded in 1926 and is one of the oldest Brazilian universities dedicated to teaching, research and extension. During more then 80 years of history, over 35 thousand students have graduated at UFV.

Currently, high quality teaching is provided, at no cost, to over 12 thousand students through out 36 undergraduate and 30 graduate (MSc and PhD) courses. UFV’s excellent undergraduate instruction is the result of its highly qualified faculty, infrastructure, scientific and technological research tradition.

The Animal Science Department is involved in undergraduate and graduate teaching, research and extension, working on the main livestock species. It has been assigned as the best undergraduate Animal Science School in Brazil consecutively for many years and it has been, for more than the last six years, ranked as one of the two best graduate courses. There are 33 faculties in the Department of Animal Science who carry out research in areas related to animal breeding and genetics, nutrition, physiology, reproduction, forages and management systems. Especially in the pig, research has been focused on genetic evaluation and parameter estimation, genomic analysis, housing facilities and welfare, managements systems, nutrition and reproduction.
